Camp with SOS

This week The Hub hosted a two day camp with youth from SOS Children’s Villages Lesotho. Thursday morning they started with a hike to the dinosaur footprints, followed by a day of Life Skills sessions. The sessions were led by Selebalo Molefe, he is the senior volunteer at The Hub and has years of experience working as a youth leader, having volunteered as a life-skills coach with Kick4Life, and as camp leader / volunteer with the Sentebale ‘Mamohato Network Clubs and Camps. He was assisted by Hub volunteers Thabo Mohloboli and Mampinane Kompi.

Thursday evening they had a film screening at Ha Matela Youth Centre, and started Friday with a Life Skills session where they discussed youth participation. It was followed by an animation workshop at Morija Arts Centre with Patrick Kevin Rorke. In less than 3 hours, the group had made a short animation film and were sharing it on WhatsApp.

Special thanks to SOS Children’s Villages Lesotho for letting us host them for the camp, Hub volunteers Selebalo Molefe, Thabo Mohloboli and Mampinane Kompi for leading the hike and Life Skills sessions, Patrick Rorke for the animation workshop, and Ha Matela Youth Centre for hosting the film screening. We had a lot of fun and look forward to the next camp!

Maya Azucena and Morija Cypher

Saturday September 24.9, 2016 The Hub hosted a day of music in the Morija Museum Amphitheatre.

The day started with award-winning American singer/songwriter Maya Azucena and her band holding a motivational talk for Morija youth, in partnership with U.S. Embassy Maseru. The talk was followed by a free performance, with special guest Bhudaza. Hosted by the U.S. Embassy Maseru, Maya and her band were in Lesotho for one week to help celebrate 50 years of partnership between United States and Lesotho.

In the afternoon the Morija Cypher took over the amphithteatre. Young artists in Morija had a chance to share the stage with some of Lesotho’s top hip hop artists. Massive thanks to Meloh, Sadon, O.G. S’killz, Mookho, Kislev, AP General, Sensi Rankin for coming through! The cypher was made possible by the support of Morija Museum, and by Ragga Vybz, big thanks to them for bringing so many artists to Morija who the youth look up to! It made Saturday a very special day for us and the young people of Morija.

Photography Workshop with Joël Tettamanti

We would like to thank Joël Tettamanti, Alliance Française de Maseru and Pro Helvetia for a fantastic three day photography workshop!

Joël is a professional photographer from Switzerland, in  Lesotho for his upcoming exhibition ‘Kobo’, which opens at Alliance Française de Maseru on Friday September 23. He photographs slowly and extremely precisely, using a large-format camera with a tripod, frequently very long exposure times and conventional 4 x 4-inch colour negative material.

The group got to see some of his photography from around the world, and images from ‘Kobo’. The participants will also get to travel to Maseru for the opening of the exhibition.

Congratulations to Keketso Mohola for winning the best photo for her series of three images! Her prize was a cap from Basutoland Ink. Thanks to them for their support of our work at The Hub.

Teaching computer skills to LNCW students

Since March 8th 2016 (International Women’s Day), The Hub has been holding weekly computer skills training with students from the Morija chapter of Lesotho National Council of Women’s (LNCW) vocational schools. The group consists of 14 girls, many of whom are orphans or vulnerable youth. They study sewing for a period of two years.

The Hub sponsors this activity, and enables the girls to come at no cost to them or their school. Some of the lessons so far include:

  • creating text documents
  • creating spread sheets
  • typing, formatting text
  • setting up an email address
  • using Google Drive
  • copying, pasting between documents, email
  • attaching documents, images to email

The computer skills training improves not only the students’ computer literacy, but also provides The Hub volunteers with a platform to strengthen their teaching and facilitation skills.
