Raliphoofolo, a super shepherd

From April 22-23, 2017 The Hub hosted Patrick Rorke for a weekend workshop on Animation. In celebration of Earth Day, the animation created by participants over the weekend was a story about a super shepherd Raliphoofolo, who encourages us to keep our communities clean.

Special thanks to Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa for supporting The Hub’s weekend workshops, and to Patrick for sharing his skills with us.

2018 off to a busy start at The Hub!

2018 is off to a busy start at The Hub! Weekly Job-Ready Fridays have included Skills Sessions on professional tips, SkillShare, CV writing, application writing, and script writing. For Hub Talks we have hosted The Nala Project, GEM Institute, and Kuena Moshoeshoe. Upcoming Hub Talk speakers include L-Tore, DJ Quizy and Bofihla Neko.

Weekend workshops started this weekend with creative writing. In March we will have weekend workshops on sound production, led by T-Mech, and film making led by Pheello Pj Makosholo.

We’re also looking forward to Sunday Cypher on Sunday March 4, an afternoon of music and performances with an open mic in the Morija Museum Amphitheatre.

The Hub’s film crew is growing

The current unemployment rate in Lesotho averages 28%, with youth unemployment at an estimated 38%. With projects like film making and photography, The Hub aims to capacitate young people with digital media skills that will help them to pursue employment and entrepreneurship opportunities.

The Hub’s film crew has started shooting a short film based on a poem titled ‘Girl Child’, written by Mats’eliso Moruthane at our weekend workshop on storytelling with Lineo Segoete in October last year. The poem talks about the challenges of being a girl, poverty, and family.

We also have many film related workshops coming up at The Hub: three consecutive weeks of Skills Sessions on script writing with Patronella Sello Diedricks, and a weekend workshop on film making with Pheello Pj Makosholo in March!

Many thanks to Inside Out Media for the MacBook Pro and Adobe Creative Suite that we use for editing!

WordPower is back!

WordPower is back! We had our first session today. Last year, we read Blood Ties by Zimkhitha Mlanzeli from FunDza. Three WordPower participants wrote letters to Zimkhitha to tell her how much they loved the book, and Zimkhitha was kind enough to send signed copies of her books and FunDza t-shirts to all three. Congratulations to Tsebo Makakole, Eketsang Tsoaeli and Tlotliso Makotoane. Unfortunately Tlotliso couldn’t be with us today but we’ll be sure to get her prizes to her!

Ba re Lit Fest 2018

From January 12-13, members and volunteers of The Hub had fun at Ba re e ne re Literature Festival 2018.

On Friday January 12, we joined Storytelling with Film, a showing of three short films and conversation with the film directors:

“Words after the world: a film in progress” by Christian Nyampeta
“Monna oa motsamai” by Pheello “PJ” Makosholo
“Mosonngoa” by Lemohang “Jeremiah” Mosese and Hannah Stockmann

On Saturday January 13, we started with some of our members getting to take part in a writing workshop. The rest of the festival programme was divided up between interesting discussions, ending with a keynote by Mpho Letima. She talked about how instructors and learners can contribute to re-imaging the learning process so that it better responds to interests and concerns emanating from the people, heritage and landscape of Lesotho.

We also got to see a powerful performance by Morena Leraba, a Mosotho musician who fuses traditional Sesotho lyrics with modern sound, from Electro, Afro-House and Hip-Hop. Hear his music on SoundCloud: http://soundcloud.com/morenaleraba.

Many thanks to the Ba Re team, and to Selibeng sa Thuto Trust for their support of our travel to learning opportunities like this.
