Weekend Workshop: Storytelling

From October 14-15, The Hub hosted Lineo Segoete for a weekend workshop on storytelling. Day one started with a brainstorm with participants on ideas, who then created timelines of their own stories, and shared them for feedback. From there, participants started developing their own stories while working in groups, and received feedback from Lineo on their first drafts.

Day two started with participants working on finishing their stories. Part of their work was doing research to make sure that their facts were correct, and getting feedback from Lineo. Participants then read a part their stories out in front of everyone, before splitting into smaller groups to practice reading out loud. There was a noticeable difference when the participants came back in front of everyone to read their entire stories. The lessons learned this weekend will help our members in many fields – from self-confidence, reading, writing, to visual storytelling like film making and photography. We are incredibly proud of all of them for having the courage to share their writing!

Many thanks to Lineo for spending the weekend with us and sharing her knowledge! We would also like to thank Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa and Anthony Maeder for their support of our weekend workshops, and Cafe Mojo for the fabulous job they do of keeping us fed all weekend!

Africa Code Week 2017

From October 19-31, 2017, The Hub hosted Africa Code Week. Hub volunteer Mats’eliso Moruthane led lessons for students from Morija English Medium School, Nkhono ‘Mamohato Training Centre and Thabeng High School at The Hub, with assistance from other Africa Code Week volunteers.

The students got an introduction to computer programming using Scratch, a programming environment and online community where kids create, share and remix animations, stories, interactive art and video games. Find out more about Scratch: https://scratch.mit.edu/.

We are already living in a world dominated by software. The next generation’s world will be even more online and digital. Anyone can learn to code! In a few hours you can pick up the basic skills and in a few weeks you will be able to build useful applications and websites. Learn more at: http://africacodeweek.org/.

Africa Code Week Lesotho Chapter has been a great experience for us at The Hub. We hope to keep our partnership with GEM Institute going, and encourage more young people in Lesotho to learn to code!

Conversations at Morija #3

On October 7, 2017, The Hub’s volunteers and members partook in Conversations at Morija #3 at Maeder House, curated by Lerato Bereng. The conversations created a dialogue about the very concept of independence, whether national, social, gender-based, creative or literary, and featured an exciting line up of speakers: Natalie Buthelezi, Simon Gush, Lerato Seema, Khabele Mofelehetsi, Zakes Mda, and Frohawk Two Feathers.

The Hub was proud to support the event with equipment and Wi-Fi access. We were able to engage in thought-provoking discussions with brilliant creative minds across the globe.

As always, our internet connection is sponsored by the Vodacom Lesotho Foundation. Big thanks to them for their continued support of The Hub.

Weekend Workshop: Screen Printing

From September 16-17, 2017 The Hub held a weekend workshop on screen printing, led by Sfatela Local Printing.

On day one, the participants had a lot of fun learning the basics of screen printing, using designs that were already exposed onto the screen. Day two had participants drawing their own designs and cutting them out to create stencils. Then the stencils were used to print their designs onto clothing.

We would also like to thank Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa and Anthony Maeder for their ongoing support of The Hub’s weekend workshops!
