WordPower @ The Hub

WordPower is a new literacy program launching at The Hub in September 2016.

Participants of the program will meet once a week to read and discuss fiction, poetry and plays by writers from around the world, and will be engaged in writing exercises that will encourage creative and personal expression. The aim of the program is to foster a love of reading and writing amongst participants, and to strengthen overall reading, writing and linguistic skills. The majority of WordPower sessions will be held in English, but sessions in Sesotho will also be held, and participants will be encouraged to read and write in both languages. Written work by participants will be published online and in print.

WordPower sessions are free and open to anyone, sign up at The Hub!

Online Exhibition

In May 2015, the Alliance Française de Maseru hosted the exhibition Women in Resistance (WIR) by French photographer Pierre-Yves Ginet. Twelve photographic portraits and written profiles of Basotho women sponsored by Vodacom Lesotho Foundation were displayed alongside Pierre-Yves Ginet’s work.

In November 2015, the twelve portraits moved to the Morija Museum and Archives (MMA), where the WIR exhibition was officially reopened in partnership with the Vodacom Lesotho Foundation and The Hub. With support from the Vodacom Lesotho Foundation, the texts of the twelve portraits were translated into Sesotho, so that the inspiring stories of the women profiled could be accessible in both languages.

In February, eleven members of The Hub were trained in the basics of portrait photography and journalistic writing. They worked in pairs to photograph and interview six inspiring women in Morija.

On March 30, 2016 The Hub opened the exhibition of the students’ work at Morija Museum & Archives. It will remain open and free for viewing April – May. Schools are invited to bring classes for guided tours of the exhibition, and an essay writing competition is open to High School students based on the exhibition.

When the exhibition is taken down in Morija at the end of May, it will remain available on this website.

The Sankofa Photography Project

This week marked the beginning of a new photography project at The Hub titled ‘Sankofa’. Each month will have a different theme, the theme for May is ‘Heritage’. Hub members will be encouraged to check out cameras from The Hub, and photograph anything they seem fitting to the theme.

The best photo each month will be chosen by a panel, with prizes sponsored by Cafe Mojo, Morija Guest Houses & Tours, and Lindy’s Catering.

We’re looking forward to seeing the results from this project!

Sankofa is an initiative run by The Hub volunteers. If you would like to support our work, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
