WordPower kickstarted at The Hub!

WordPower, a brand new literacy program at The Hub, kickstarted with its first session yesterday! We had a great time learning about writer and filmmaker MK Asante and reading extracts from his memoir, Buck. WordPower will be meeting every Thursday at 4pm. Everyone above the age of 14 is free to join, even if you are not a member of The Hub!

Workshop by Paleng Children’s Centre

On August 30 2016, The Hub hosted Marion Drew and Khothatso Ranoosi from Paleng Children’s Centre for a workshop for teachers from Morija Primary School and Morija English Medium School. The teachers received an intro to the African Storybook Project, received books created by Paleng Children’s Centre for their school libraries, and manuals on creating and using stories in the classroom to support literacy acquisition.

Special thanks to Marion and Khothatso, and to our core sponsors Standard Lesotho Bank and Vodacom Lesotho Foundation for enabling us to do this kind of outreach work.

Our library is growing

The library at The Hub is growing!  We are quickly acquiring a wide range of books on activism, the arts, photography, film-making, history, poetry and fiction. Our library is integral to our core aims of encouraging curiosity, artistic knowledge and an interest in social activism among our members.

In August 2016, MK Asante donated copies of his memoir ‘Buck‘ to The Hub. They will be used as the first reading material at WordPower, a  new literacy program launching at The Hub in September 2016.

The library also includes a digital library with music, films, documentaries, books, magazines, music videos, tutorials and more. They are stored on a hard drive that the computers access through our wireless network. The purchase of the hard drive was made possible by individuals who donated toward a crowd funding campaign, and by Friends of Lesotho.

All the books in the library are from individual donors. Special thanks to everyone who has donated books, and to Amanda Draper for contributing toward the expense of shipping books to Lesotho in August 2016. If you would like to donate books to our library, please contact us.

The Sankofa Photography Project continues to grow at The Hub.

Each month has a different theme, and Hub members are encouraged to check out cameras from The Hub, and photograph anything they see fitting to the theme.

The best photo each month is chosen by a panel, with prizes sponsored by Cafe Mojo, Morija Guest Houses & ToursLindy’s Catering, and Nyla Elise Clothing.

In honour of the Basotho New Year, the theme for August was ‘New Year, New Life’.

For September – October, the theme is ‘Film is my ammo’. The theme challenged Hub members to tell stories through their images, and to use photography toward positive social change in our community.

If you are interested in sponsoring prizes for The Sankofa Photography Project, please contact us.
