#TotalShutDown

The Hub partook in the #TotalShutDown march against Gender Based Violence. We are proud to be part of this important movement in Southern Africa, many thanks to our friend Lineo Tsikoane for setting an example in activism for the rest of us to follow!

Maseru, Lesotho – midday, Wednesday 1st August 2018. The police have stopped traffic on one of the city’s main roads. Drivers peer out of car windows, frowning. Passers-by look on with curiosity as a group of protesters walk down the road, placards and fists held high, bringing this major thoroughfare to a standstill.

#TheTotalShutdown march in Lesotho took place simultaneously with similar marches in eSwatini, Botswana, Namibia and all nine provinces of South Africa – as hundreds of women across Southern Africa joined forces to protest gender-based violence and to demand concrete action from political leaders.

At the end of the silent march in Maseru, women gathered to speak out about their reasons for marching – with many sharing poignant testimonies of their personal experiences of gender-based violence.

“We have had enough!” shouted Lineo Tsikoane – human rights lawyer, National Programmes Officer for the Coalition of African Lesbians and one of the organisers of the march – as she addressed the crowd. “We were silent by choice as we marched, but from today we will not be silenced! From today, if an uncle in our family is raping a child we will not keep silent! We will shame him; we will bring discomfort to his space! From today my queer sister is still my sister and it’s OK!”

“We are trying to sensitise women in our communities,” Tsikoane explains. “We are trying to show them that there’s support, that what’s happening in their lives is wrong – that it shouldn’t be normalised, it shouldn’t be accepted. Lesotho has one of the highest rape statistics in the world ¬– but what are our leaders doing about this problem? What should happen? What more will it take? We are trying to spark government action here.”

Weekend Workshop: Animation

From July 21-22 2018, The Hub hosted Patrick Rorke and Linotšing Animation Studio for a weekend workshop on Animation, using claymation. In the morning of Day 1, participants did brainstorming on stories around the theme of youth unemployment, and voted on a winning storyboard. They then continued with character development and started creating the figures and set for their claymation. On Day 2 participants continued to shoot scenes for the short film, while others recorded a song and dialogue, and some started post production! Post production will continue this week, look out for the short animated film coming soon!

Many thanks to Patrick and Linotšing Animation Studio for spending the weekend with us! Special thanks also to Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa and Glasswaters Foundation for their support of this workshop!

Weekend Workshop: Comics

Our weekend workshop on comics from July 14-15, 2018 with Lisema Seemi Mapetla was lots of fun! He started with character development using the question ‘If you could have a super power or an object with super powers to make our community and country a better place, what would it be?’ Participants then split into groups to mind map and begin to work on their comics. Lisema was joined by graphic designer Lehlohonolo Tlhaole, and on Sunday they helped participants begin to digitize the cover art for their comics. We’re now home to a troop of super heroes, fighting a range of crimes and social injustices!

Huge thanks to Lisema and Lehlohonolo for sharing their skills with us, and to Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa and Glasswaters Foundation for their support of weekend workshops!

Big opportunity for The Hub’s volunteers

We’re looking forward to seeing the behind the scenes footage shot by The Hub’s volunteers, when they got to join Pheello Pj MakosholoCarl Houston Mc Millan and Christian Denslow on a film set from July 9-10, 2018.

“Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity”. This quote, attributed to Roman philosopher Seneca, reminds us that we make our own luck. We’re so happy for our three volunteers to have had this opportunity; they’re the driving force behind our film making crew, and all activities that take place at The Hub!

New film making equipment

Huge thanks to everyone who helped The Hub’s film crew acquire our new sound equipment! It took generous donors through our crowd funding campaign, and several kind people to have the equipment delivered to us in Morija. We are thankful to everyone who has played a part in building this group of young film makers!
